Glasses

When it comes to serving the best gin, plain old glassware simply will not do. Don’t worry, though, at Barentsz Gin we are always happy to help make your next gathering a gin-sation!

Here is a list of the TOP 6 Glassware to take your drinks to the next level. As an added bonus we have included a list of cocktails so you are all ready to serve and wow at your next get-together. Keep reading to see our FAQ section – you asked, we answered.

1. The Copa

Coming in at Number 1, the ultimate and elegant Copa de Balon, or balloon glass. This long-stemmed beauty is a must for any gin-lover and our Copa Gin Glasses can be ordered easily on our online store

The Copa glass has a unique round bowl which means that there is plenty of room for ice – so you always have a chilled drink that is not diluted. With more room for garnishes, you can instil more flavours into your cocktails. The long stem makes proper gin glass etiquette easy (always hold the stem and never the bowl to avoid warming the Gin) Last but not least, Copa Gin Glasses offer a wide brim which lifts the perfume of your cocktail. Perfect for a G&T or a Fizz, you will enjoy the exotic Jasmine fragrance as you tip and sip.

Speaking of highballs, these are probably the quintessential gin glasses UK.

2. Highballs

The highball is a classic with its straight glass, they are designed to handle a lot of ice and mixer. The tall and narrow dimensions will keep your drinks cool and carbonated. This makes them the perfect glass for anything fizzy. Here are a few of our favourite cocktails that should be poured and served in a high ball.

Jasmine Gin Fizz

This beautiful fizz was featured on Food & Wine and served at The Drunken Monkey. This fizzy cocktail can be served in a Copa or highball.

You will need:

Willem Barenstz Gin 50ml, Lemon Juice 25ml, Jasmine Flower Syrup 20ml, Egg White 15ml, Soda Water, Grapefruit

Slice the grapefruit and remove the peel. Shake the egg white and add to the cocktail shaker. Add all ingredients except for soda and shake. Top off with the soda water and garnish with a grapefruit slice.

If you love a perfect G&T, you can make your own easily with Barentsz Exotic Jasmine Gin(40ml) FeverTree Tonic (150ml) or 1724 tonic, with an orange twist. This can be served in a Copa Gin Glass or Highball.

Gin Fizz

This simple but tasty gin fizz features Willem Barentsz Exotic Jasmine Gin, Fresh Lemon Juice, Simple Syrup, Cold Soda Water, and a sprig of mint or other garnish.

Gin was actually the first spirit used in a fizz. Similar to a Tom Collins a fizz is served in the shorter highball unlike the Tom Collins typically poured into a taller glass.

3. Martini

This famous cocktail is so popular it has a glass named for it. The Martini Glass with its thin step and wide brim is perfect to accentuate the aroma of the Martini and keep your cocktail cool without ice. Our classic Martini features Barentsz Gin and Dry Vermouth. Chill your martini glass with soda water and ice. Then add the dry vermouth to coat the ice, drain to leave just the coating, add gin and stir. Fine strain into the Martini glass and voila a stirred Martini that even James Bond would enjoy. Zest with orange peel and garnish with an orange twist.

4. On the Rocks

A rocks glass may seem simple but these tumblers are perfect for short drinks with a strong flavour. A wide base and mouth, as well as their thick base, allows muddling ingredients. That means you can build your cocktail right in the glass!

Enjoy a Barentsz Negroni with Campari and Sweet Vermouth. An elegant treat in a beautiful old fashioned glass.

5. The Coupe

A bit of a cheeky myth involving one Marie Antoinette aside, the true story behind the coupe began in England 1600s. They have become the clear winner ahead of the Martini Glass for their superior design. The long stem and wide rim make them similar to the Martini glass without the spilling risk.

Scarlet & Purple

Our speciality cocktail the Scarlet & Purple looks and tastes perfect in a Coupe glass.

50ml Barentsz Gin
15ml Lilley Blanc
15ml Lavender Syrup
20ml Lime Juice
50ml Lychee Juice

This romantic lavender cocktail should be shaken and garnished with a pretty sprig of lavender. Pour into a Sour Coupe and enjoy!

Bees Knees

For a lovely Christmas cocktail to serve at a party, try a Bees Knees.

Using our new flavoured Barentsz Mandarin & Jasmine Gin, add honey, fresh orange juice, and orange zest to garnish. Stir, then shake well and pour into a coupe. This will have your guests buzzing happily.

6. The Flute

Last but not least the glamourous Champagne flute. Perfect for anything sparkling the narrow shape keeps your drinks pleasantly fizzy. To highlight aromatic botanicals in a cocktail, always use a Champagne Tulip which has a wider bowl. This will let your ingredients aerate.

French 75

Any champagne cocktail list that doesn’t include a French 75 is remiss. This classic only requires a few easy ingredients. Barentsz Exotic Jasmine Gin 1 freshly squeezed lemon, and some sugar. Top with champagne and add a long lemon spiral and a cocktail cherry.

Raspberry Gin Bellini

Here’s a pretty pink drink to serve your favourite gal pals, the Raspberry Gin Bellini.

Barentsz Exotic Jasmine Gin 25ml
Dash of fresh lemon juice
3/4th of a glass of Prosecco
4 Raspberries

Muddle the raspberries in the bottom of a cocktail shaker add gin, juice, and ice and shake. Strain well into a flute and top with Prosecco.

FAQs

Now that you have a shopping list worth of fantastic glassware and cocktails enjoy our FAQ section. You asked we answered:

1. What are the quintessential glassware musts to starting an at-home bar?

If you can only get a couple of pieces of glassware, be sure to get Copa de Balon and a tumbler, they are both excellent choices for Gin glasses UK. The Copa is the perfect glass to hold the aromas in while the large bowl leaves plenty of room for ice and other flavourful additions. A tumbler is a hit for any muddled drink or classics like drink our Barentsz Exotic Jasmine neat or a rich negroni.

2. What are aperitifs and digestifs?

An aperitif refers to a drink one imbibes before a meal to awaken the palate while the digestif is an after-dinner drink to aid in the digestions. Popular gin aperitifs include a Negroni, the Gin & It, a cocktail of gin and sweet vermouth. Digestifs tend to be brown spirits, but Juniper berries and other herbs are known to aid digestion as well.

3. Does my cocktail need a twist?

A cocktail doesn’t require a twist however it does add a nice decoration, more importantly, adds flavour and dimension. Try a floral or citrus notes with our Handcrafted Gin. We love adding an orange twist to Barentsz Exotic Jasmine Gin or a sprig of lavender to our signature Scarlet & Purple.

4. I am planning a fundraiser event where we will be serving G&T and other cocktails and canapes, which glassware is worth getting?

We recommend a Copa de Balon, its elegant but sturdy stem and large bowl are perfect for great G&T’s and other gin-inspired cocktails. We offer sets on our online store that feature our signature rich blue on the stem and base and a beautifully frosted globe with an image of our namesake, the Dutch voyager Willem Barentsz. These were a hit at the French brasserie, Aubaine. (Take a Peek HERE for some inspiration)

5. Should Gin be chilled?

Like most alcohol, Gin is fine left out of the fridge but for the best taste keep it in the refrigerator for a crisp flavour every time.

6. Does the type of tonic matter?

Yes. You wouldn’t want to use Handcrafted Gin and then add inferior tonic. We recommend FeverTree or 1724.

7. What are good types of garnishes?

This depends on the cocktail you are having. For example, a lemon spiral is a great garnish for a famous Whiskey and Ginger. A wheel or slice of fresh citrus can do wonders to your cocktails so don’t leave ou this important piece.

8. Shaken or stirred?

Technically, either work. But, really it should be stirred if its a Martini (sorry James Bond) There are great Gin drinks that should be shaken. Take a look at our Cocktails page.

9. We want to have a gin-themed hen party what food pairs well?

Brilliant idea. All types of savoury and sweet canapes pair perfectly. We recommend a smoked salmon and unctuous dumplings for savoury and gin-infused sweet treats like gin cheesecake and gin and lemon tarts.

10. I would like to get my father-in-law a great gift, any ideas?

You can’t go wrong with a bottle or three of our Handcrafted Gin. We now offer wonderful gift sets that are sure to please. Depending on he occasion, you can set him up with a bottle of our classic Premium Barentsz Jasmin Gin and FeverTree Tonics, or a set of our elegant Copa Gin Glasses and bottle of our new flavoured Gin, Mandarin & Exotic Jasmine.
